Who We Are
Real Yoga is a yoga school run by Mike Lever & Steve White using live stream remote classes (via YouTube) as well as actual student present classes, for those people who wish to start from scratch, or develop further, their understanding of Real Yoga, based on Eastern traditions and form, but adapted to meet and relate more closely to today’s more modern and westernised demands and challenges, so all manner of people regardless of background or age can find some benefit physically and mentally from the understanding and practice of Real Yoga.
Mike has taken his successful therapy practice established in 1994 much further in recent years looking into the art, science, and study of Real Yoga, and along with his interest in Buddhism, this has given him a real edge as a fully trained advanced ‘Living Yoga teacher‘.
Mike only took up yoga later in life having noticed that his body was starting to feel his age, and so wanted to see how this feeling and effect could be reversed. After studying at the Yoga Sanctuary under Steve Harrison, Mike qualified after 4 years of intense study as a Living Yoga Teacher and then went onto taking his advanced Living Yoga Teacher training. With his further studies in eastern yoga which took Mike to Rishikesh in India where Mikes path really came to light. As he began to practice and study Yoga, and then later teaching the Power of Real Yoga to connect with our inner Yogi.
Mike’s passion was to develop a style of yoga learning with the wisdom and depth of the East to fit into the mind set of more western culture. Why do this? well, rather than relying on the medical profession in our older years, yoga has the knowledge and the wisdom to provide anyone of any background or environment the tools and skill set to improve their mental, emotional, and physical well-being.
So, what’s in it for new students who have never before come across yoga, or have dabbled, or maybe have suddenly found an internal interest in the subject?

My yoga journey
“My journey started when I was very stressed on a daily basis due to my work/home life balance. My life was always 100 miles an hour until now. Before I started, I had many injuries, bad knees from years of football, a broken wrist that never healed properly and a thumb with arthritis.
My first few sessions i enjoyed the stretching but struggled with the breathing and being able to relax. I spoke with Mike leaver (teacher) and he said that with practice at home and belief, I would turn everything around. I'm 6 months into yoga and I can honestly say that it has totally changed my life. My aches and pains have disappeared, my arthritis has disappeared, and it has done wonders for my mind. I have now learnt how to relax and take life at a more relaxed pace. My life has been transformed and I'm the happiest I've ever been ….. Jules
Do you ever get the “I’m too old, too unfit, too busy, it’s just not me“ feeling, more and more ?
A daily 20 minute practice for just one month will see immediate benefits of all of these:
1. Increase flexibility -
2. Build core strength -
3. Restores good posture. -
4. Opens a road to mindfulness.
5. Boosts your metabolism
6. Reduces high blood pressure.
7. Expands lung capacity.
8. Restores healthy sleep patterns.
9. Reverses illness and aging markers.
“Do you ever get the sense that you’re not the central or most important thing in your own storybook”
As the slogan suggests, in yoga terms I could not have been more ‘normal bloke’ or a more stereotypical example of most male misconceptions concerning the shear pointlessness of starting to learn and bring real yoga into their life.
The phrases ‘it’s about being bendy and stretching‘ and ‘it’s a women’s thing ‘ or ‘I don’t get all that spiritual stuff and yoga pants’ could not be more accurate of my instinctive views on yoga classes.
A yoga class dabble here and there, when pushed to do so maybe, but it was all shapes and postures and my complete lack of balance, flexibility (and it seemed coordination of any kind) sent me home feeling relaxed but unconvinced, where were the benefits, for an already so it seemed, ‘fit bloke’ I thought? None of my mates are doing this, or my kids or my parents.
But what was out there at the age 50 apart from just a feeling like I was bored stiff of the gym routine and cross fit was just too bloody hard !!
So what changed?
Well 3 main things. Firstly after my late 40’s arrived my quite fit and healthy body started to complain more and more on a daily basis, occasionally hindering my daily or sporting life for annoying amounts of time, bad posture issues due to workplace, lack of vitality, general aches and stiffness , and maybe more importantly– spirituality starts to pop up! A nagging question in the back of the mind started developing, ‘Who the hell am I ?’ what’s ‘this life all about really?’, ‘where’s it all heading?’, and why have I got no idea or control over it.
Secondly, and the most annoying by far an increasingly over active ‘thinking mind’, that despite anything I did, go on vacation, gym, drink, spend money, save money, worry about money, would just not shut the ‘ f.. k up and be settled, calm and acceptive of ‘life’ as it is… questions needed bloody answering suddenly..!!!
After flirting with yoga classes for a few years, my serious start to Yoga classes began, and with my fit ego still running high at just 52 years young !! and with lockdown asking previously unspoken questions – I went into the subject with serious intentions of success, something you later learn is not the point or to be gauged or judged in any way.
What I learnt over the next 3 years was incredible and life changing.
Regular classes with Mike developed much greater body flexibility and bad posture related health problems ceased, the enjoyment of probing the question of ‘who am I’ in a safe environment without fear of judgement and developing a deep meaning of how I wanted to remain fit and heathy emotionally, spiritually and physically – just for me.
This beginners course is how I began, I knew yoga by then for sure, but I didn’t understand how to use it – so I started from scratch. Therefore come and join me and find own your path and let’s have some fun along the way..
Give it a go - you have nothing to lose, yet so much to gain!
